Tri-State Expo Juneteenth Affairs (TSEJA) to Host Film Festival Featuring Local Talent and Partnership with PBS' Independent Lens

Updated: Dec 28, 2024

Dothan, AL – On Friday, November 1st, 2024, Tri-State Expo Juneteenth Affairs (TSEJA) will host its film festival at the Wiregrass Boys and Girls Club (Dothan, AL) inside the gym at 6:30 pm. The festival will showcase the works of locally cultivated cinematographers and amateur filmmakers competing for recognition. A highlight of the event will be a screening of Episode 5 of "The History of White People in America" from PBS' Independent Lens, featuring nationally acclaimed poet and Alabama's Poet Laureate, Ashley Jones.

"Excited is an understatement," exclaims Evangeline Reynolds-Gunn, TSEJA's Executive Director of Programs. "The film festival has blossomed overnight, and we can't wait for the public to see the incredible talent from the Wiregrass area and beyond."

Partnerships like this with the Wiregrass Boys & Girls Club, Independent Lens, and Alabama Humanities Alliance bring local cinematographers reputable platforms to present their work. The film festival is preceded by students at the after-school program receiving sponsored film classes (through TSEJA) from Short Stuff Photography and Evergreen Creative Studio.

TSEJA is known for its commitment to sharing the message of Juneteenth, the accomplishments of the descendants of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the African Diaspora, and the need for cultural equity in grassroots communities. The organization desires to use art in various forms such as cinematography to tell compelling stories and explore social truth.

The film festival is free to the public with light refreshments of popcorn and beverages being provided. For more information, please email TSEJA at ereynolds@tristateexpodothan.com.
